There is also a new version of SimpleAirmap by Ben Friedland as of 5 Feb 2014 - available from This is great to use in addition to instrument based airspace, as a printed quick reference sheet and to plan for airspace further ahead. Information copied from the website: An easy to use airmap of the southern UK, showing flying sites, fitting on one A4 sheet. Contains only those features relevant to free flight, excludes: HIRTAs, bird reserves, areas activated by NOTAM, restricted areas not applying to free flight. Includes instructions for novices. Based on Garmin maps.

On that page, go to where it says: Img2GPS Installer - installs maps in format suitable for loading to gps using Img2GPS program Note the warning immediately under that which says 'REMEMBER - loading these maps on your GPS using either method will OVERWRITE all maps on it except the base map, INCLUDING those on a memory card if fitted. REMOVE memory card first!!'
3.I can't exactly remember the exact steps from there, but the image files you want to upload to your gps are either semi-transparent or transparent, depending on how much of your base map you want to be hidden by the airspace. I'm using the UK everyday airspace transparent Hope this helps a bit. Site Admin Posts: 1062 Joined: Sun Mar 24, 2013 8:11 pm. Hi Dave, I've just pasted my notes below which have a little more detail than what Geoff just posted - might be useful for the first run through. If it doesn't work let us know and we'll try to help.

INSTRUCTIONS TO INSTALL AIRSPACE (COURTESY OF SIMON HEADFORD) TO GARMIN GPS UNITS – THIS PROCEDURE TESTED WITH GARMIN GPSMAP 76 SERIES-You’ll need either Garmin Mapsource or Img2GPS software - To proceed with Img2GPS, if you don’t already have it you may need to obtain the software from someone else as lately hard to find on Internet. This link was working recently: - Install Img2GPS - Download airspace file from (choose Mapsource or Img2GPS file as appropriate) - Run the airspace file you downloaded (it’s an.exe) and note where it extracts the map files to; default is c: garmin airspace or install to a folder of your choice - Open Img2GPS, click ‘Load’, navigate to the folder as per step above and choose file of your choice: airspace.img or airspaces.img or airspacet.img (ignore the others). See description below: Opaque - Obscures all of base map to the extent of the outer limits of the map - ie the smallest rectangle enclosing all coordinates plotted (usually all of the UK) Semi-transparent - Map background transparent, airspace opaque. See parts of base map that are not obscured by airspace Transparent - Map background and most airspace transparent except for ATZs, CTRs, Ds, Ps, Rs and Para Drop Zones. I must be missing something as despite selecting e.g.
Airspaces.img with Img2GPS, once the files are loaded into the program, I still get a list of airspace files for all opaque, semi and transparent options. Not a problem though, just tick the appropriate airspace files you wish to upload with the appropriate transparency and leave the rest unticked. There are 6 files for each transparency level – e.g.
Everyday airspace, 8000+ airspace etc. Now most importantly, a warning from from the download site: “With img2gps/sendmap20 EVERY upload process overwrites ALL maps currently held in the GPS memory EXCEPT the units pre-installed basemap. I guess it's probably the same with MapSource but I don't know for sure. Recent (2012) evidence has shown that when uploading the airmaps to a Garmin with a card slot the process may erase data from any card installed in the GPS at the time upload. If you have any maps on a memory card that are not backed up play it safe and REMOVE the card. Memory card slots have been around on Garmins for quite a while now so I don't know why this hasn't come to light before, but there you go.” - In Img2GPS program set I/O to auto - Connect GPS to computer and turn on GPS, wait a few moments - Click upload to GPS in Img2GPS (will be very quick for USB connection and ages for serial connection) - Once transfer is complete, on the Garmin go into ‘setup’ –‘ Maps’ and check the new airspace is uploaded and ensure you have a tick next to the ones you wish to have active Official instructions here: Posts: 138 Joined: Thu May 02, 2013 12:45 pm.
